FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about evolution, breeding, character systems, Windows default controls, server behavior, and combat recovery in Mesozoic Dawn.
Evolution & Breeding
How to evolve into a higher creature?
When you reach 60% growth, you are considered an adult. If you are female, you can reproduce parthenogenetically to lay an egg. Once the egg develops to 100%, you can choose for the offspring to evolve into a new species.
How to increase the chance of an Evolution Egg?
The higher your nutrition, the higher the chance of laying an Evolution Egg. Evolution Eggs represent the potential to become a higher-tier creature.
How to lay eggs?
Laying eggs consumes nutrition (larger body size consumes more). Higher nutrition increases the probability of offspring becoming Evolution Eggs. If breed is too low (near 0), egg generation rate is extremely slow or stopped, making it impossible to produce enough eggs for laying.
Is there a special rule for the first Evolution Egg?
The first Evolution Egg of each species is guaranteed to be female. This is a system safety net to ensure players can always obtain a female offspring for continued breeding.
What is the use of a Nest?
Nests provide protection for eggs and extend their preservation time. Nests also accelerate egg incubation (+50%) and provide resurrection effects. Resting on the nest to "brood" boosts incubation to +100%.
How to resurrect with a Nest?
First, your nest must contain a 100% developed egg. When you die, you can choose to resurrect as this egg.
What are the resurrection methods in the game?
There are four resurrection methods after death. The first three are checked in priority order, but Egg Rebirth overrides all others — if your nest has a 100% developed egg, you will always revive as that egg.
- Era Rebirth (server rule Era Rebirth rule): Triggers when era > 1. Revives as the same race with era −1.
- Downgrade Rebirth (server rule Downgrade Rebirth rule): Triggers when you have an evolution source, are the lineage founder, and have unlocked a parent race. Revives as the parent race at era 1.
- Male Rebirth (server rule Male Rebirth rule): Triggers when male with an evolution source. Revives as the evolution source race at era 1.
- Egg Rebirth (always available): Triggers when a 100% developed egg exists in your nest. Revives as that egg. This overrides all other resurrection types.
How do male dinosaurs evolve and breed?
Males can seek females of the same species to mate, or ask friends to invite them to hatch, becoming the other's offspring.
How to find a mate?
Both parties must be of the same species and adults. A prompt appears when close, allowing you to send an invitation. Direct relatives (parents/children/siblings sharing a mother or father) are blocked by the system from mating — there is no inbreeding penalty because it is outright prevented.
How do mates breed offspring?
After mating, the male approaches the female and can invite her to lay eggs (ensure the female has 2 eggs inside).
What are the advantages of offspring bred by mates?
Offspring from eggs laid by invitation inherit genes from both parents, with a chance to synthesize higher genes and a higher probability of being Evolution Eggs.
How to accelerate egg incubation?
Complete Nest (no brooding): +50% speed. Brooding on a complete nest: +100% speed. High temperature weather: +25% speed (stacks with nest). Low temperature weather: -33% speed.
How to invite others to hatch?
The other party must have unlocked this dinosaur (previously owned it) to receive the invitation.
Conditions for dissolving a partnership?
Character death; evolution into a new dinosaur; mutual agreement to dissolve. There is a 1-hour cooldown after dissolving.
- Character death.
- Evolution into a new dinosaur.
- Mutual agreement to dissolve.
- There is a 10-minute cooldown after dissolving.
How to control egg gender?
Temperature at laying determines gender: >30°C: 70% chance female. <20°C: 70% chance male. 20°C-30°C: 50% chance female.
How many nests can I own?
One character can own only one nest.
What is the maximum egg limit?
You can own up to 6 eggs simultaneously; you cannot lay more if this limit is exceeded.
Character
Is my save file kept if I go offline?
Save files are preserved after going offline, and eggs continue to develop.
Note: If you close the app directly, the character remains for 60 seconds and may be attacked. Use “Safe Exit” in the top right to be safe.
How to improve nutrition?
Eat fresh food to improve nutrition ratio. Higher nutrition means faster growth and higher Evolution Egg chance.
What are the advantages of male dinosaurs?
Males have stronger survivability, higher damage, faster growth, and default special genes. Males can resurrect once with a level drop (unless hatched by invitation).
What is the use of genes?
Genes represent different attribute Buffs and Debuffs.
How do small carnivores find food?
Small carnivores have specific ant hills as food sources or can catch fish in lakes. Medium/Large carnivores must hunt.
How do herbivores find food?
Herbivores generally eat bushes; giant creatures like sauropods eat tree leaves.
How to fix spawn location?
If you own a nest, you will spawn near it after death.
Advantages of hydrophilic creatures?
They get unique hydrophilic genes, offsetting defense decay in water. They can stay underwater longer, consume less oxygen, and perform more actions in water.
Which creatures can pick up and eat in water?
Only amphibious, hydrophilic, and aquatic creatures can pick up objects and eat while in water. Land and flying creatures cannot pick up items or eat/drink when submerged.
What is the use of muscles?
Muscles affect attack stamina recovery speed. Higher muscle efficiency means faster stamina recovery during combat.
What is the Energy Allocation System?
Characters have a five-channel energy allocation system. Each channel's ratio can be adjusted in the gene panel (10%-65%), with a total not exceeding 100%:
- Lung Energy (default 20%): Oxygen output + sprint stamina recovery speed
- Heart Energy (default 25%): Health recovery speed
- Defense Energy (default 20%): Shield recovery speed
- Muscle Energy (default 20%): Attack stamina recovery speed
- Growth Energy (default 15%): Growth speed + egg development speed
- Higher ratios increase the corresponding function's efficiency (up to 1.35×); below default reduces it.
What is the use of Offspring Followers?
On enabled servers, hatched offspring can follow commands:
- Standby: Stay put, no action.
- Attack: Actively attack nearby threats.
- Defend: Counterattack only if attacked.
- Protect: Counterattack only if the owner is attacked.
- Patrol: Patrol a range and attack threats.
- Flee: Run away from threats until safe.
- Focus Attack: Attack the master's designated target.
Why can't I destroy nests/eggs?
You cannot destroy them if you are in a protection period. Also, if your damage is too low to penetrate the nest's defense, you deal no damage.
What is the use of the Heart?
Provides blood regeneration by consuming oxygen to produce health recovery. Low oxygen/energy reduces heart output. Heart efficiency is affected by the "Heart energy allocation ratio". The heart does not take damage from oxygen shortage alone — it is only damaged by specific attacks that apply the Heart Failure debuff.
What is the use of the Stomach?
Converts food/water to energy for organs. Insufficient food lowers energy supply, causing organ failure.
What is the use of Lungs?
Lungs produce oxygen (v4.0+: no longer consumes the energy pool; output efficiency is controlled solely by the "Lung energy allocation ratio"). Damaged lungs produce less oxygen, potentially leading to hypoxia. Different habits (aquatic/amphibious/hydrophilic) have different breath-hold times and breathing mechanics underwater.
What is the use of Reproduction?
Breed (fertility) is a fixed efficiency multiplier that determines egg generation rate inside the body — it is NOT consumed per egg laid. Higher breed means faster egg formation. At 0 breed, egg generation stops (sterility). Breed does not decrease from laying eggs — it only decreases when damaged by specific attacks.
What is the internal egg limit?
Represents how many eggs can assume form inside the body at once; generated automatically.
What are the growth stages?
Character growth is divided into the following stages:
- CHILD: 0%-20%, smallest size, weakest survival
- JUVENILE: 20%-40%, begins independent foraging
- YOUTH: 40%-60%, approaching adult size
- ADULT: 60%-80%, sexually mature, can breed (growth speed ×0.75)
- STRONG: 80%-100%, peak attributes (growth speed ×0.5)
What are Gene Bank and Character Slots?
Gene Bank saves "100% Growth" characters preventing overwrite. Slots limit how many characters an account can save. You can switch to saved characters anytime. Unsaved characters are overwritten by new creations or hatch invitations.
Server
Why did I disconnect suddenly?
Disconnections may be due to network fluctuations or server maintenance. Daily maintenance restarts occur around UTC 06:00 and take 1-5 minutes.
Combat
What implies the green shield on an enemy?
A shield indicates a protection period (cannot be attacked). Whether you can penetrate the shield depends on your Penetration level vs. the defender's Armor/Tenacity level (see Armor Penetration system), not on raw combat power difference. You cannot destroy eggs/nests while under protection.
Combat power difference (within/above 50 points) mainly affects SAN value changes and kill skill proficiency bonuses — it is not directly related to shield penetration.
Who has damage immunity?
Your offspring and mates have default damage immunity.
What to do if bleeding or fractured?
Bleeding and fractures are duration-based DEBUFFs that expire automatically over time (exact duration depends on the source). Fractures reduce speed and prevent dash attacks and evades. The "Calcification" gene grants complete immunity to fractures. Bleeding causes continuous health loss. Resting does not directly remove these DEBUFFs but improves overall recovery efficiency.
What does roaring do in a team?
If you are in a team, roaring will allow your teammates to see your position and current status (health, stamina, etc.) on the map and in the game view, making team coordination easier.
Can't heal after combat?
Being attacked puts you in combat state (no healing). Healing starts 30s after leaving combat.
