Character Health and Metabolism System Guide

Player guide covering hunger, hydration, nutrition, organ recovery, energy allocation, environment adaptation, growth, breeding, and combat recovery.

1. System Overview: Understand the survival loop first

The health and metabolism system is the core survival mechanic in Mesozoic Dawn. What you see is not just a few bars, but a full physiological loop where every part affects the others.

  • Five core organs: The stomach, lungs, heart, defense, and reproduction each have their own efficiency. Hunger, dehydration, harsh environments, and stress can all damage them.
  • Resource cycle: Food and water first support the stomach so it can generate energy. That energy then supports the lungs in producing oxygen, the heart in restoring health, defense in absorbing damage, while development and reproduction depend on allocation efficiency.
  • Core principle: Energy represents digestive power. Organs calculate efficiency from the energy value, but they do not directly drain the energy bar. If you want steady performance, the most important things are still staying fed, staying hydrated, and staying in a suitable environment.

Player takeaway: If you stay completely starved or dehydrated for too long, or force through extreme temperature and humidity, organ efficiency will drop. Even after your supplies recover, the organs still need time to slowly repair.

2. Core Resources: Take care of these 7 indicators first

Hunger

  • Role: Provides the raw material for stomach digestion and is one of the main sources of energy.
  • Drain rate: During sleep, about 1/5000 of the maximum per second. While awake, about 1/3600 per second. Once health drops below half, it starts draining faster and faster.
  • Player tip: Keep hunger above 50% whenever possible. Heat, cold, Berserk, and stress all increase food consumption.

Hydration

  • Role: Maintains fluid balance and is also required for the stomach to function.
  • Drain rate: During sleep, about 1/3600 of the maximum per second. While awake, about 1/1800 per second.
  • Habit differences: Amphibious creatures can rehydrate quickly in water. Aquatic and marine creatures refill even faster in water, but also lose water more noticeably out of water. Terrestrial, aerial, and hydrophilic creatures do not automatically rehydrate in water.
  • Player tip: While swimming, perceived humidity is pushed straight to 100%, which is especially important for amphibious and aquatic characters.

Nutrition

  • Role: Affects growth speed and reproduction efficiency, making it the resource most worth stabilizing during development.
  • Effective range: 41 to 60 is standard efficiency. 61 to 80 improves growth and reproduction. 81 to 100 gives the highest efficiency and the lightest development pressure.
  • Player tip: Keep nutrition above 60 during growth whenever possible. Once nutrition is above 50, development costs become much easier to manage.

Energy

  • Definition: A 0 to 100 digestive power score determined by food satisfaction, water satisfaction, and stomach efficiency.
  • How to read it: Above 80 means strong digestive power. Below 20 usually means you are starving and dehydrated. It shows points, not a percentage.
  • Player tip: Organs only read the energy value to calculate efficiency. They do not directly consume the energy bar. Low energy usually means you are not eating enough, not drinking enough, or your stomach is already damaged.

Oxygen, Health, and Defense

  • Oxygen: The better your lung efficiency and the more comfortable the environment, the steadier your oxygen recovery. Terrestrial and aerial creatures usually suffocate about 30 seconds after going underwater. Amphibious and hydrophilic characters can last longer, while marine reptiles have the biggest advantage in deep water.
  • Health: Reaching 0 health means death. Health recovery is affected by oxygen, heart efficiency, and defense status.
  • Defense: Defense absorbs damage first. Sleep, comfortable environments, and higher allocation all speed up its recovery. It still regenerates in combat, but far more slowly than out of combat.

3. Organ Systems: You can only save it if you know what is failing

Organ efficiency directly determines resource conversion. The lower the efficiency, the less you get back from the same food, water, and rest.

Stomach

  • Function: Turns food and water into energy and decides whether the whole system has steady digestive power.
  • Cause of damage: Letting hunger or water hit zero continuously damages the stomach and sharply lowers future energy output.
  • Recovery: It repairs fastest while you are healthy, and even faster in a comfortable environment. Refill food and water first, then rest for the clearest recovery.

Lungs

  • Function: Produce oxygen and also affect sprint endurance and long-duration activity.
  • Risk: Bad humidity, oxygen shortage, and lung damage all slow oxygen recovery.
  • Recovery: Lungs repair slowly, so it is best to rest in a comfortable environment instead of pushing while short on oxygen.

Heart

  • Function: Uses oxygen to produce health regeneration and is the core of both staying in a fight and recovering after one.
  • Player read: When the heart is lightly damaged, higher heart allocation can still keep you close to normal. At moderate or severe damage, allocation alone will not save it and you must wait for natural repair.
  • Recovery: Restore oxygen first, leave combat, refill food and water, then sleep for the best results.

Reproduction

  • Function: Female only. Determines how fast eggs develop.
  • Activation conditions: You must be female, adult, not elderly, and have development allocation above 0.
  • Stop conditions: Berserk, stress, old age, or manually lowering development allocation to 0 will all stop reproduction.

Recovery order: Get out of combat and extreme environments first, then refill food and water, and finally use sleep to speed recovery. The stomach repairs fastest, while the lungs and heart need more time.

4. Energy Allocation: Put efficiency into the organs that need it most

Energy allocation does not spend energy. It decides which efficiency line gets the higher weight. Allocate it correctly and the character almost feels like it is running on a different rhythm.

  • Lungs: Minimum 10%, default 20%, maximum 65%. Too low makes oxygen shortage easy. Higher allocation is good for long runs, chases, and water crossings.
  • Heart: Minimum 10%, default 25%, maximum 65%. It has the most direct impact on health recovery, so it becomes a high priority when you are low on health or trying to keep fighting.
  • Defense: Minimum 10%, default 20%, maximum 65%. Good for holding the line, soaking damage, and restoring defense after fights.
  • Muscle: Minimum 10%, default 20%, maximum 65%. Leans toward damage output and stamina recovery, and feels strongest in chases and short burst windows.
  • Development: Minimum 0%, default 15%, maximum 65%. It can be shut off completely. Higher allocation is best for growth and egg laying.
  • Total constraint: All five allocation lines together cannot exceed 100%, or the setup cannot be saved.

How to read the multiplier: Going above the default gradually raises organ efficiency, and a maxed line reaches about 1.35x. Going below the default reduces it linearly, so not every line can stay suppressed for the long term.

Common presets

  • Balanced preset: The most versatile choice for daily patrols, steady survival, and uncertain situations.
  • Tank: Shifts the focus to defense and heart, making it better for front-liners that need to soak damage.
  • Endurance chase: Strengthens lungs and muscle, making it better for long runs, pursuits, and drawn-out pressure.
  • Offense focus: Puts muscle first, making it better for short burst damage and starting fights on your own terms.
  • Health recovery: Raises heart allocation and is best for emergency recovery after disengaging or for long, slow healing.
  • Fast development: Concentrates resources into development, making it best for juvenile growth and preparing to lay eggs.
  • Max lungs: Best for ocean crossings, escapes, or any situation with extreme oxygen demand.

5. Environmental Adaptation: Your comfort zone is your supply station

Perceived temperature and perceived humidity continuously affect consumption, recovery, and development efficiency. The environment is not just scenery. It is the cheapest and most stable source of bonuses.

  • Comfortable: When both temperature and humidity stay inside your adaptation range, the whole system performs better. This is the best zone for resting and growth.
  • Heatstroke or hypothermia: Food and water consumption increase, organ output drops, and trying to force through it makes you weaker the longer you fight.
  • Humid or dry: High humidity suppresses breathing efficiency, while dryness makes water drain faster.
  • Swimming effect: After entering water, perceived temperature moves toward your adaptive midpoint, while perceived humidity becomes 100%.
  • Habit advantage: Amphibious, aquatic, and marine characters should make heavier use of water to restore hydration, stabilize comfort, and extend their survival window.

Player tip: If you find an area with both suitable temperature and suitable humidity, you have found the best resting point. After a fight, do not lie down where you are. Move to a comfort zone first, then recover.

6. Growth and Reproduction: When to push development

Growth stages

  • Hatchling (0 to 20%): This is the most fragile stage and the one with the fewest reserves. Your core task is simply to stay alive.
  • Juvenile (20 to 40%): You can start acting independently, but this is still not a good stage for high-risk frontal fights.
  • Subadult (40 to 60%): You are gradually maturing, so this is a good time to prepare territory and routes for adulthood.
  • Adult (60 to 80%): You reach sexual maturity and can begin reproducing, but growth speed starts to slow down.
  • Prime (80 to 100%): This is the peak phase. The focus shifts from rushing growth to stable survival, territory control, and offspring.
  • Elderly: Organs gradually decline, and reproduction is no longer possible.

Speeding up growth

  • Keep nutrition above 60: Growth efficiency becomes more stable, and the total cost of raising the character also drops.
  • Stay in a comfortable environment: Environmental bonuses directly raise both growth and recovery efficiency.
  • Raise development allocation: This converts into growth progress faster, but it also squeezes the space available for other allocations.
  • Pick the right genes: Metabolism genes are better for pushing growth, while breeding genes are better if you want to prepare for reproduction earlier.
  • Avoid stop conditions: Berserk, stress, or setting development allocation to 0 will all stop growth immediately.

Reproduction conditions and tips

  • Basic conditions: You must be female, adult, not yet elderly, and have development allocation above 0.
  • Efficiency key: The higher your nutrition and the more comfortable the environment, the faster your eggs develop. The best results start above 80 nutrition.
  • Player tip: Stock up on food and water before laying eggs, and place the nest in a safe, comfortable area so you do not get forced to stop halfway through.

7. Combat Survival: 30% defense is the life-or-death line

In combat, do not look at health alone. Defense is your true first lifeline. Once defense gets broken into the danger zone, the collapse that follows comes very quickly.

  • Defense above 30%: The heart can still keep health regeneration running normally, which means you still have stable room to recover.
  • Defense below 30%: Health regeneration stops, and this is the danger window where you need to retreat.
  • Defense recovery in combat: Defense still comes back slowly in combat, but only at a fraction of the out-of-combat rate. Sleep pushes the recovery even higher.
  • Best recovery order: Leave combat first, then find a comfort zone, refill food and water, and sleep last. This is much safer than trying to hold out in place.

Handling organ damage

  • Light damage (above 70%): Increase the matching allocation and you can usually keep performance close to normal.
  • Moderate damage (around 50%): Allocation can only salvage part of the efficiency. You still need rest and environmental recovery.
  • Severe damage (below 30%): Do not gamble any further. Retreat immediately and stay alive while natural repair catches up.

8. Common Questions: Check these causes first

  • Why am I not healing at all? First check whether defense has fallen below 30%. Then check whether energy is too low, the heart is damaged, or you are carrying a heart-failure-type negative status.
  • Why is growth so slow? Usually it means not enough nutrition, development allocation is too low, the environment is uncomfortable, you are under Berserk or stress, or you have already entered the slower post-adult phase.
  • Why is defense not recovering? It is already slow in combat. If defense allocation is too low, digestive power is too weak, or you never sleep, the recovery becomes even less noticeable.
  • Why is energy always so low? Check food, water, and stomach efficiency first. Low energy does not mean your organs are secretly consuming it. Usually it just means digestive power cannot come up.
  • What do I do if the heart is damaged? If the damage is light, raise heart allocation first. If it is already moderate or severe, stop forcing fights and quickly restore oxygen, leave combat, and sleep for repairs.
  • Which allocation is the most stable? Use Balanced most of the time. Use Tank on the front line. Use Endurance Chase for pursuit. Use Health Recovery when low health becomes life or death. Switch to Fast Development for growth and breeding prep.
  • Why does oxygen drop so fast in water? Terrestrial and aerial characters naturally suffocate quickly underwater. For long water crossings, switch to amphibious, aquatic, or marine characters instead, or move to a high-lung allocation beforehand.
  • Why can't I lay eggs? Make sure you are female, adult, not elderly yet, not under Berserk or stress, and your development allocation is not 0.
